This Enfield Musketoon, with 24" barrel, is dated 1861 on the lock plate. Made for the caliber .577 hollow base Minie bullet that allowed quick reloading, achieved fine accuracy, and much longer range than the round ball muskets of an earlier generation. The rear sight is calibrated and marked in 100 yard increments, up to 600 yards. Enfield muskets were imported and issued by both the North and the South. The Confederacy purchased Enfield muskets from neutral England, and brought them into the South, at great risk, aboard the blockade runners. Unlike Springfield muskets, this Enfield musketoon is trimmed in brass, and stocked in close grain English walnut.

This is an early Parker Hale Musketoon, made in Birmingham, England, with English proof marks. Later production was moved to Italy. This Musketoon is offered in used condition with a bright well maintained bore. The cartouche is clearly visible in the buttstock. The original nipple protector and chain are included. Trigger reach is 14" to fit today's average size shooter. Weight is 7.3 pounds.

The .577 caliber tapered round 24" barrel is rifled with five wide lands and narrow grooves. The bore is bright, clean, and ready to shoot. The polished and blued barrel is tapered round, with a distinct flat at the breech, which makes a smooth transition to the tang. The top of the barrel is marked with a crown over BP, indicating a black powder proof at Birmingham. The tang is faintly stamped with the same proof marks. The top of the barrel is marked PARKER-HALE LTD, BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND. The left side of the barrel is stamped with the serial number near the breech. The blue finish is in excellent condition. The correct Enfield ladder style military sight is fitted ahead of the breech. The front sight is the factory original steel blade. A bayonet lug is mounted to the right side of the barrel 4-1/4" behind the muzzle.

The brass buttplate, triggerguard, and muzzle cap are retained with blued steel screws, as original. The two barrel bands are polished and blued. Sling swivels are mounted for a military sling, no sling is included. Stocked in English walnut, with relatively straight grain, the stock is finished to a light brown with satin sheen. Notice the circular cartouche, the maker's inspection mark, stamped in the center of the buttstock, exactly as found on original Enfield muskets. The steel ramrod has 12-28 male threads for attaching cleaning accessories. Two brass sideplate washers are inlet flush into the stock, and counter bored to accept the two lock bolts.

The color case hardened lock has the classic Enfield percussion hammer. The hammer is nicely engraved with a border, and checkered at the thumb spur. The color case hardened finish on the lock plate has faded toward the front. The lock plate is stamped 1861 ENFIELD, and the tail is stamped with a crown (indicating ownership by the Crown), and the initials PH. This replica Enfield rifled musket is fitted with a Ampco 5/16-18 threaded Enfield musket nipple. We can supply a similar 5/16-18 threaded nipple for standard No. 11 caps or musket caps. Order our #NW-100 nipple wrench. The tiny blued steel stud ahead of the triggerguard is a lanyard loop. The factory chain with nipple protector are attached.
