Our smallest powder horn is 4 to 5" long, for priming flint locks, with a classic carved neck. It closely matches our medium or large powder horn. When ordering both a powder horn and priming horn, request a "matching set", and we will select a color matched pair.
Creamy white cow horns have always been prized as powder horns.
Notice the hand cut facets of the neck, at the transition from from the white body to the dark neck. A deep groove for the leather strap adjoins a raised square ring, followed by two concave rings, and a polished tapered spout.
The dark stained turned maple butt plug has a turned acorn shape finial, for the leather strap. Brass nails surround the base end. The tapered stopper has a deep groove, for the lanyard cord. The acorn was a common symbol of strength and prosperity, found on English and American triggerguard finials.
Hand made in the U.S.A., this attractive priming horn is a piece of American folk art, functional, graceful, and useful. It will give a lifetime of good service.
This full size powder horn is ready for your hand scrimshaw engraving, and decoration, if desired. Many old horns were personalized with maps, poems, names, dates, or primitive folk art depicting towns, heros, and hunting scenes.
