Shaped but not mortised for a lock, this Hawken halfstock is modeled after the later work of Jacob and Samuel Hawken, with the later beavertail found on halfstocks. We strongly recommend straight grain maple for large bores. This Hawken halfstock is right hand, for a 1” octagon barrel. Select your favorite lock, plug and triggers, practice simple inletting, order our full scale Hawken rifle plans, and build your own. A true Hawken rifle is a complex design, and is not considered to be a good first project for the novice scratch builder.
This Hawken Rifle halfstock is not inlet for lock, trigger, or tang. Cut for a 1” straight octagon barrel with a 7/16" rod hole, drilled full depth. Not cut for a buttplate, you may install your choice of early wide buttplate or late narrow buttplate. Pull length may be up to 14-1/4”, with 3-3/4” drop, and a 15” forend length. Butt end is about 4-1/2” x 1-1/2” width. The beaver tail cheek piece is Hawken’s classic design.
