Build Track's John & Caleb Vincent, Ohio halfstock rifle parts set,
with 13/16", or 7/8" straight octagon barrel
An 1840 - 1860 vintage Ohio halfstock rifle, in the style of John and Caleb Vincent, signed by talented gunsmith J. Eddie Brown. The highly figured maple stock has been stained to best reveal the stripe and figure. The figure and the reddish undertone combine to make this rifle very appealing to the eye. The classic Vincent style scroll surrounding the barrel keeper pin is nickel silver, and the forend cap is polished poured pewter. These are correct features, all commonly found on collectible original antique Vincent rifles. The brass entry pipe retains the 5/16" diameter ramrod. Vincent rifles use this small ramrod, regardless of caliber. The entry pipe has octagon flats, and the skirt tapers to a point. This appearance is almost a Vincent signature. Mr. Brown has captured the slim grace and feel of the original Vincent rifles. These were not thick or clumsy, but were simple and elegant.

Track's John & Caleb Vincent halfstock is offered in two different barrel channel sizes, 13/16", or 7/8" straight octagon. We offer barrels from a variety of manufactures including: Green Mountain, and Colerain barrel blanks in selected sizes for this set of parts.

Colerain Barrel Company offers a select few calibers and octagon sizes in straight octagon barrels. Offered in .36, .40, .45, or .50 caliber depending on octagon size. Colerain straight octagon barrels are threaded to accept the breech plug. Colerain rifle barrels are the favorite choice of today's best muzzle loading gun makers, because knowledgeable shooters demand Colerain's accuracy, inside and outside. Founded by two entrepreneurs, Scott Keller and Scott Kelly were tutored by Bob Paris, the famous rifle barrel maker who was first to perfect the technique for production of correct swamped barrels.

Colerain rifle barrels are cut rifled, with fancy radius groove rifling geometry, in correct twist rates for round balls:

Colerain rifle barrels are drilled from solid steel. Each barrel has six "round bottom" grooves, called "radius groove rifling". Colerain eliminates the sharp inside corner that accumulates fouling. Radius groove rifling cutters are a bit more expensive to make, but Colerain's customers agree that the accuracy, easy loading, and easy cleaning are worth the cost.

Shaped and pre-inlet, this slim stock is made in the style of John and Caleb Vincent. This stock is fully shaped to very near final dimension. The lock panels are crisp. The forend needs to be sanded and thinned a bit more that we dare cut by machine, to achieve original style feathered edge along the barrel. Pre-inlet for our Goulcher lock, double set triggers, triggerguard, sideplate, buttplate, toeplate, and entry pipe. This stock has 13-1/2" pull, and 3-3/4" drop from the line of sights. Like all Vincent rifles, the ramrod hole is drilled full depth for our 5/16" ramrod.

Our wax cast John & Caleb Vincent furniture; buttplate, sideplate, toeplate, triggerguard, and 5/16" ramrod pipes, are offered in wax cast brass only. The sideplate is the later smaller style. Inlay escutcheons are nickel silver. Correct unplated screws and pins are included. A one pound ingot of pewter is included to pour your forend cap, instructions are included for this operation. Barrel underlugs are machined from solid steel, and will need to be dovetailed to the barrel. Our gunsmith can install this lug after fitting the breech plug, at small extra cost.

Front sight is a brass base, nickel silver blade. The rear sight is a semi-buchhorn. Our gunsmith can install these sights after fitting the breech plug, at small extra cost.

This Goulcher lock is pre-inlet in our Vincent rifle stock. The Goulcher family made thousands of locks. They are found on plains rifles, late longrifles, pistols and shotguns of the 1840 to 1880 era. Cut for a 1/2" powder drum. The lock has an engraved hammer with 1.65" throw, engraving is cast-in. Internally identical to our Jim Bridger's Hawken Lock, with tempered parts, fly detent for set trigger, and stirrup link. Made in right hand, only.

This R.E. Davis double lever double set trigger has a front trigger lever to engage the sear, so the lock may be fired with the trigger unset. The trigger bar is about .400" wide. Wax cast steel parts are finished, tempered and assembled. We stock spare parts, in the unlikely event that any part will ever break. Overall length 5-3/8", bar .400" wide. Ideal trigger placement will put the trigger adjustment screw directly under the sear of the lock. This allows engagement for both the set and unset trigger positions.

The #PB-KIT-13-B brass, or #PB-KIT-13-S nickel silber, cap boxes are a copy of originals used on an Ohio rifle by John Vincent & Son. It was stocked in curly maple, trimmed in brass. Vincent rifles frequently mixed brass and German silver trim on their rifles. This nicely made patchbox has an overall length of 5-3/8". Vincent used nine steel screws on the original capbox. We recommend our #SCREW-6x1/2.

Our gunsmith can install the plug (LABOR-BP), under-lug (1 LABOR-UL), front and rear sight (2 LABOR-DS), mount the under rib (4 LABOR-DT), and solder ramrod pipes (2 LABOR-RP) at small extra cost, with prompt delivery. If required we can shorten 42" barrels from the breech (1 LABOR-RB)

#LABOR-BP: Our gunsmith will install your breech plug, in your barrel, with the front face of the breech plug tightly sealed against the inside shoulder of the breech thread, and the barrel maker's name indexed to the bottom flat. Threads are lubricated with Birchwood Casey's Choke Tube Lube anti-seize, so the plug may be removed, even after decades of use. Never remove a breech plug, unless you have a compelling reason. The plug is never removed for cleaning, and should only be removed by a skilled gunsmith, who has the correct tools to avoid marking your polished and finished barrel and plug.

#LABOR-DS: When you buy the sights from us, we will remove any burrs, gates and parting lines, and hand fit the sight to the dovetail slot, ready for you to finish and use. Many of our rear sights are cast with an oversize base, to allow these to fill oversize slots. It is wise to allow us to trim these to a standard size before installation in a new barrel. We require fitting the breech plug before performing this operation.

Front sight slots are centered 1.5" from muzzle, unless your clearly specify another location. Do not embed special instructions within lengthy text of a letter. Place special instructions immediately after your written order for that item, or in the comment field of our on-line order form.

Rear sight slots are centered 8.5" from the breech end of the barrel (not including plug), unless your clearly specify another location. Do not embed special instructions within lengthy text of a letter. Place special instructions immediately after your written order for that item, or in the comment field of our on-line order form.

#LABOR-UL: When you buy the lugs from us, we will remove any burrs, and hand fit the lug to the dovetail slot, ready for you to finish and use. Allow our gunsmith to determine the best location for lug. Vincent rifles only require a single lug. We require fitting the breech plug before performing this operation.

#LABOR-DT: We drill and tap blind holes, usually 5-40, drill, counter-bore and mount the rib. Rifles usually require four(4) screws. We require fitting the breech plug before performing this operation.

#LABOR-RP: We mill a flat on each rod pipe, and a matching flat notch in the rib. After "tinning" both flats with solder, we clamp the pipe, heat the joint, and cause the two solder coated surfaces to be joined. We require fitting the breech plug and mounting the rib before performing this operation.

#BOOK-RAL: If you have never built a rifle from scratch we recommend the book Recreating the American Longrifle. The late William Buchele was recognized as a true master longrifle maker. But his greatest contribution to muzzle loading must be this book. He shares the step by step details of his craft. His work has been enhanced by the editors. This book does not assume that the reader is an expert stock maker, but begins with illustrated explanations of the basic concepts. Buchele shows several alternate approaches to most tasks. Newly revised fifth edition. Full scale plans include a carved longrifle and fullstock pistol. Over 250 photos and drawings within the 176 pages, 8-1/2 x 11" format, soft cover.

#TOOL-DRUM: Use Track's drum drilling jig to install a percussion powder drum on your new rifle barrel, and be assured of perfect alignment. Using this drilling jig is very quick and easy. No file fitting is required to index the nipple to correctly engage the hammer. Never use a washer or shim under your powder drum. Install one of our drums and use this tool to locate and install the nipple threads. After your lock is correctly located, and fully inlet against the barrel's side flat, drill tap and install our undrilled powder drum. Tighten it snugly against the barrel. Lower the hammer on your lock, and draw a line across the face of the drum, showing the proper nipple angle. Remove the barrel and drum assembly from your stock. Slip this tool over the drum. Align it with the line on your drum. Tighten the locking screw, and insert the drill bushing. Using your hand drill and your #3 drill bit, drill a connecting hole into the powder drums center channel. Remove the drill, bushing, and insert our 1/4-28 plug tap. Using a tap handle and cutting oil, thread the hole to accept our #RST-A nipple. Finish with our bottom tap. Dismount the drill jig, and proof test your barrel and drum before use. Drill, taps, drum and nipple sold separately.

We strongly recommend that you order our new catalog, which describes this kit in great detail, explains the options, and shows most individual parts in exact full size photographs.
