This flint .54 longrifle bears the signature of John Bergmann, whose fine longrifles are appreciated for their quality, artistic merit, and correct details. Modeled after the work of Isaac Haines, this longrifle is used, with a natural aged patina and a bright well maintained bore. The work of Isaac Haines was little known until John Bivins and his associates began emulating his work. Apparently Joe Kindig, Jr. did not have an Isaac Haines longrifle in his vast collection, so Haines was not listed in Thoughts on the Kentucky Rifle in its Golden Age. Dr. George Shumway suggests that the original gunmaker, Isaac Haines, may have been Lancaster County's most influential gunmaker, bringing his knowledge of sophisticated Philadelphia carving styles to his region, during the 1770's.

Made in the popular Lancaster County, Pennsylvania style, stocked in curly maple, the figure has attractive stripes and modest swirls, from muzzle to butt. Stained to an attractive amber brown, with gold undertones common to rifles from the Lancaster region. The stock is expertly raised carved with smooth clean backgrounds. The brass furniture has aged to a natural mellow patina from handling, firing, and cleaning. The barrel and Siler flintlock are finished to a smooth chocolate brown. The rifle has a 13" trigger reach for today's average size shooter. The rifle weights 8.0 pounds, and holds quite steady.

The .54 caliber swamped octagon Colerain barrel has a 38" length. The swamped octagon barrel is thickest at the breech, tapers to a narrow waist, and flares slightly at the muzzle. The bore is cut rifled with six lands and radius bottom grooves, with a slow twist for patched roundball. The bore is bright, clean, and ready to shoot. Colerain rifle barrels are the favorite choice of today's best muzzle loading gun makers, because knowledgeable shooters demand Colerain's accuracy, inside and outside. Colerain rifle barrels are drilled from solid steel, cut rifled with six "round bottom" grooves. Called "radius groove rifling", Colerain eliminates the sharp inside corner that accumulates fouling. Radius groove rifling cutters are a bit more expensive to make, but Colerain's customers agree that the accuracy, easy loading, and easy cleaning are worth the cost. The barrel is finished to a smooth even brown, which nicely compliments the stock. A brass flat top rear sight with decorative finial is dovetailed 10-1/4" ahead of the breech. A nickel silver blade with brass base is dovetailed 1-1/2" behind the muzzle. The top flat of the barrel is engraved J F Bergmann and the left oblique flat is stamped 54 near the breech.

The stock is a lovely piece of maple, stained to an amber brown with golden undertones to best reveal the figure. The buttstock has the classic angular lines of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The stock has a few small handling marks, which appear appropriate with the patina on the brass. The buttplate comb is finished with broad flats and a wedding band transition. The raised carving around the tang is very well executed with smooth lines and well cleaned background. A single bolt passes through the tang and stock to engage the trigger plate below. Three small pins surrounded by nickel silver fish shaped inlays retain the barrel to the forearm. The wooden patchbox features raised moldings and a thumb relief. Press the release spring forward and the patchbox easily slides open to reveal a deep cut cavity for storing flints, jags, or other shooting accessories. Incised carving runs from the trigger plate back towards the toe on both sides of the buttstock.

The bottom view shows the engraved brass toe plate that is fitted to this rifle. The toeplate helps to protect this delicate areas of the stock when loading. The triggerguard is hand filed with crisp flats and has a nice mellow aged patina. A slight palm swell is shaped in the forearm around the ramrod entry pipe. A panel of raised carving surrounds the tail of the entry pipe and transitions into a raised molding that runs along the edge of the ramrod channel. The ramrod pipes are brass with raised rings on the ends and paneled bodies. The ramrod is fitted with brass tips, the rear tip has 8-32 threads and the front has 10-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories. We note the ramrod extends 1/2" past the muzzle. A brass muzzle cap protects the end grain of the stock. The engraved brass side panel is neatly shaped and fitted with a classic square tail Lancaster County sideplate. The cheek piece is expertly hand carved with decorative scrolls in the style of Isaac Haines. The carving is well done with smooth clean backgrounds. A nickel silver oval inlay with engraved hunter's star decorates the center of the cheek.

Sure-fire ignition is provided by a Chamber's large Siler flintlock. The lock plate has been finished to the same chocolate brown to match the barrel. We recommend our 3/4" knapped English flints for best performance in this lock. The double lever double set triggers are correctly tuned to fire from the set or unset position. You may set the triggers before, or after cocking the lock. Adjust the screw between the two triggers. Turn it inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, outboard to require stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather. Fast ignition is assured by the stainless steel hex vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

Very neatly assembled with fine raised carving. This rifle has a well used appearance with a few handling marks on the stock, and a mellow patina on the brass furniture. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. Mr. Bergmann's fine longrifles are contemporary American folk art of the best quality made today. Order it for a ten day visual inspection.
