Stocked in curly maple, stained to light brown to best reveal the tiger stripe figure, this lovely iron trimmed flint longrifle is made in Southern Mountain or Tennessee style, with an iron buttplate, triggerguard, toeplate, and furniture. This rifle is used with a few handling marks on the stock and wear on the brown finish from firing and cleaning. The barrel is signed by contemporary builder Jack Garner between the breech and rear sight. Trigger reach is 14-1/4" to fit a taller than average size shooter. This rifle weighs 7.7pounds, and balances just ahead of the ramrod entry pipe. The rifle is used with scattered handling marks.
The .50 caliber barrel is 7/8" straight octagon and a full 42" long. The bore is rifled with six lands and grooves with a relatively fast twist about 1 in 38". The bore is bright and has been well maintained. The barrel is signed Jack Garner between the breech and rear sight. The semi-buckhorn rear sight is dovetailed 10" ahead of the breech. The front sight is a tall browned iron blade sight dovetailed behind the muzzle.
The figured maple stock is stained light brown, with golden undertones, to best reveal and display the tiger stripe figure in the wood. The iron furniture has been finished chocolate brown to match the barrel and lock. Nicely fit, the patchbox is opened easily by pulling up on the rear of the lid at the butt of the rifle. Finished to match the rest of the iron furniture on the rifle, the patchbox is a nice addition appropriate to the gun. The barrel is fitted with a short straight tang.
The long triggerguard, is mounted with iron screws in traditional fashion. Such long iron triggerguards were hand forged in the Southern mountains, and are unique to the American longrifles from this region. A small iron toeplate is fitted to this rifle, mounted with two iron screws, to protect the toe during loading. A steel muzzle cap protects the end grain on the forend. The ramrod pipes are formed from sheet stock. The ramrod is fitted with a 8-32 threaded brass tip for loading and cleaning accessories. Our side view shows the simple raised cheek piece, and flush inlet iron sideplate.
Sure-fire ignition is provided by this well tuned small Siler flint lock. This lock is fitted with a very strong mainspring, to throw showers of sparks. The lock has only a few scratches on the frizzen face from firing. Finished in brown, the lock plate has a rich chocolate brown color, and smooth non-glare surface finish. This primitive American longrifle will not shine, or glare in the field. The double lever double set trigger, by R. E. Davis, is adjusted to allow the lock to be cocked, or the trigger set, in any sequence. Trigger geometry is set to give this rifle a very light release, when set, and a more firm release, when unset. This rifle has a hex wrench drive stainless steel vent hole liner. We prefer traditional liners with the cone on the inside. The vent liner is well positioned above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
This is a hand finished piece of workmanship, by a well known maker. It has some scattered handling marks as well as normal wear on the brown finish from cleaning. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund.
