This antique percussion conversion belt pistol has a French influence with a neatly checkered grip. This pistol has a .58 caliber rifled swamped octagon barrel. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. The stock is solid and does not show any cracks or repairs. The pistol was original finished as a flint lock, which was later converted to percussion. Stocked in walnut, and trimmed in iron furniture, this antique pistol has a warm patina.
The swamped octagon pistol barrel is .58 caliber with rifling that very much resembles modern micro groove rifling and measures 7" long from muzzle to breech. The barrel has aged to a silvery brown patina. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. A small silver bead front sight fitted on this pistol. A low flat top rear sight is formed on the front of the tang. The tang is decorated with border engraving in a floral pattern. The barrel is fitted with a hooked breech, and a small key retains the barrel to the forearm. Press out the key and the barrel lifts for easy removal from the stock.
The walnut stock shows many handling marks from over 200 years of use, but has no cracks or repairs. The grip is neatly checkered, and fitted with a domed iron buttcap. The tang is surrounded with raised shell carving that transitions to surround the raised brass thumb inlay. The iron triggerguard is retained with pins and has a speckled brown patina that matches the rest of the iron trim found on this pistol. The wooden ramrod passes through a one piece entry and ramrod pipe. Two bolts pass through separate sideplates to retain the lock on the opposite side.
The original flintlock has been converted to percussion on this pistol. The hole for the frizzen spring has been plugged and neatly filed flush, along with the priming pan. The percussion hammer is neatly checkered on the spur. A bolster was brazed to the breech plug to complete the conversion, and it is fitted with an antique iron nipple. The lock plate is signed, but we were unable to make out the signature. A single trigger is pinned high for good leverage against the sear.
