This replica of the U.S. Model 1842 Rifled Musket was manufactured by Armi Sport of Italy. The famous U. S. Model 1842 musket was originally made at Springfield, Massachusetts. According to the book The Northern Armory: The United States Armory at Springfield, Massachusetts, 1795-1859 by Daniel D. Hartzler and James B. Whisker, this was the last smoothbore arm developed by the U.S. government and the first of the regulation infantry arms to usher in the percussion era at the national armories. Stocked in black walnut, the musket was originally finished armory bright. The lock and barrel were polished as were the iron mountings of the musket. Originally the Model 1842 was issued as a smooth bore. Approximately 14,000 muskets were rifled between 1856-1859. Of those rifled roughly 10,000 were fitted with a long range rear sight. The rifled musket has a 13-1/2" trigger reach to fit today's average size shooter. Weight is 9.5 pounds.

This nice replica U.S. Model 1842 Rifled Musket was manufactured by Armi Sport of Italy. The tapered round 42" barrel is rifled in .69 caliber for use with a .69 caliber Minie ball. The armory bright finish has a few scattered speckles from use. The bore is bright it will make a fine shooter for the Union or Confederate re-enactor. The correct V over P proof mark of Springfield Armory is stamped at the breech, and the tiny actual modern Italian proof marks (required by their law) are stamped nearly out of sight along the bottom edge of the barrel at the breech, opposite the nipple. The date 1847 is stamped on the tang. The top of the barrel is stamped Armi Sport - Italy Black Powder Only .69 Cal.. A ladder sight is fitted ahead of the breech calibrated to 800 yards. The front sight is a blade mounted to the front of the loop of the front barrel band.

Stocked in walnut, this musket stock has an semi-gloss finish. The stock does have some handling marks and a few dull streaks from water with black powder residue wetting it. The buttplate is polished steel, and marked U. S. on the comb, exactly like the original. The trigger plate, trigger, and triggerguard bow are brightly polished steel. The rear sling swivel is mounted to the triggerguard and the forward sling swivel is mounted to the forward barrel band. Our bottom view of the musket shows off the rounded toe and brightly polished triggerguard of the musket. A military style steel sideplate is inlet flush into the stock.

The lock is polished bright, and marked Springfield 1847 (the year of production). The thumb spur of the hammer is checkered for secure grip. The breech plug tang is also dated 1847. The breech of the barrel is fitted with a 8-1mm threaded steel musket cap nipple. Order our hardened steel nipple MMI-I if you require a spare. Use our nipple wrench NW-100.
