This Kentucky pistol is stocked in curly maple, trimmed in brass furniture, with a .54 caliber Green Mountain barrel, and small Siler percussion lock. The curly maple is stained to tawny brown with a golden undertone. The brass is polished bright, the lock and barrel have a browned finish. The small Siler percussion lock has the appearance of a late 17th Century flintlock that would have been converted to percussion in the early 18th century. The upper lock panels even include the notch for the flint cock, typical of a percussion conversion pistol. The lock is mated to a drum with a 1/4-28 threaded nipple. The simple curled trigger has good leverage against the sear, for a nice light trigger release, very smooth.
The barrel is fitted with a short rounded tang. The 15/16" straight octagon barrel by Green Mountain is cut rifled with a .54 caliber, 1 in 20" twist for a tightly patched round ball. Green Mountain Muzzle Loading Pistol Barrels are machined from high quality American made bar stock, A.I.S.I. 1137 modified, stress relieved, annealed, certified rifle barrel quality steel. All barrels are drilled from solid stock, reamed to a high degree of smoothness, then optically checked for straightness.Very close tolerances are maintained. The barrel is marked with a caliber marking just ahead of the rear sight. The barrel is fitted with a flat top rear sight, and a nickel silver blade front sight. The rear sight is set near the breech to maximize the sight radius. The brown finish around the front sight has a halo from residual oil during the browning process.
Viewed from the bottom, the brass buttcap, brass triggerguard, and brass ramrod pipes are all brightly polished. Notice the octagon flats on the ramrod pipes, to echo the octagon theme of the barrel. The slender 5/16" diameter ramrod is fitted with a 10-32 thread for loading and cleaning accessories. The brass Lancaster County, Pennsylvania style sideplate is inlet flush with the side panel. The brass is polished bright. Two blued steel lock bolts retain the lock.
